Banff by Horseback

There are many ways to explore Banff National Park: by foot, bike, kayak, canoe, raft, gondola, skis, and…horse! To tour Banff from a different perspective, I suggest trying a horseback ride. No experience necessary. There are lots of different options, and if you’re unable to ride, or have children too young, you can even ride along on a wagon, or if you’re there in the winter, a sleigh!

Chances are, if you’re visiting Banff, you’re there for some good hiking and the great outdoors. We wanted to give ourselves some well-rounded variety in outdoor activities, and thought a horse ride along the Bow river would be a perfect way to give our legs a little break, while still getting some fresh air and taking in the beauty that is Banff.

We used Banff Trail Riders and had an awesome time. They have a bunch of different packages, based on location and time. At first, we wanted to do the Cowboy Cookout, which is 3 hours, including a ride along the river, a stop at their cabin for rest, games, and lunch or dinner, depending on the time of day. However, our time in Banff was limited and we wanted to use the day for a hike, and since we were inexperienced riders, we were a little worried that a long ride on horseback would just leave us sore afterwards. So we booked an hour Bow River Ride, for their last time slot at 6pm. It was perfect for our schedule. We had the entire day to hike and explore, then were able to stop at our room for showers and relaxation, go on our ride, and then get dinner and drinks after.

Full disclaimer here: the 6pm ride means the horses are about done for the day, and ready to eat. But it is a less popular booking time, so you might have a better chance in the high season. Banff Trail Riders also gives you fair warning that you must get there early to fill out paperwork, and the tour leaves promptly on time, so don’t be late. If you miss your tour, they will try to accommodate you for the next one, but if you’re booking the last tour, you’re pretty out of luck if you’re late. We pride ourselves on punctuality and since the stables were only a 5 minute ride from where we were staying in town, we were there with plenty of time. The two other groups that were supposed to ride with us however, are not as timely. They showed up late and we had the tour all to ourselves!

I hadn’t been on a horse in over 20 years and was a bit nervous at first, especially since my horse was hungry and would not leave the barn area without a bit of a fight. Our guide ended up leading the stubborn guy out and we were on our way. It was amazing having a private tour. Our guide was actually from Australia and we got to chatting about her home country, as well as life in Banff. She taught us about horses, the area, and about the legendary grizzly, “The Boss.” She also gave us local recommendations.

We had some great views, saw some elk, and overall it was a great way to spend the early evening. I’d love to go back and try the cookout, or if I’m there in the winter, try a sleigh ride. If you’re more experienced, or maybe just more adventurous, they also offer multiple day backcountry trips. If you’re looking for a different experience while in Banff, book a ride. And remember, always tip your guides!
